The Feast of Black Nazarene at Quiapo

January 5, 2009

Quiapo Fiesta here in the Philippines is also known as the Feast of Black Nazarene being initiated at the Quiapo Church in Manila from where it is taken up in the entire country as many devotees go here to see and be a part of the event. A life statue of the Nazarene from the 17th Century was made of black wood in Mexico and then transported to the Philippines through a Spanish Galleon. By means of this celebration, the death and suffering of Christ is observed. People believe that if they touch the Black Nazarene or have wiped their towels or any cloth unto it and wipe it through their body; they will accomplish prosperity and success. History says that the sculpture of Nazareth was placed in Saint John the Baptist Church in Quiapo since the year 1787. This has lingered the tradition for two centuries that the statue is placed on a gilded carriage every January and carried throughout Quiapo area. Unknown to many, January 9 is not the feast of the Black Nazarene or of Quiapo parish. Somewhat, it commemorates the transfer of the Nazareno from Intramuros Manila to Quiapo church in the 18th century.

A massive and very exceptional procession is carried out on to the streets where thousands of Catholics and even non Catholics participate and walk in bare feet. The statue of Black Nazarene is also carried in the procession which passes through various parts of Quiapo and surrounding streets every 9th of January. Huge number of people from across the country participates in this festival, which is considered to be the largest festival in the nation. Thousands of devotees are expected to keep vigil before the image of the Black Nazarene before it will be done for the parade. Before, the parade starts from the church of Quiapo going to the designated routes. But because of some stampede incidents that almost happens every year, this January 2009, the procession will start at Rizal Park. Prior to this, the statue will be brought to the place on the night of January 8 to avoid future stampede. Everybody wants to participate and hold the Black Nazarene that’s why it is so dangerous for those with weak body and weedy health to actively participate and have a closer look and try to touch the Black Nazarene. I have observed this feast before and never tried to be there in line with thousands of people really struggling to touch the statue. I do visit the church of Quiapo and have a good look to the Black Nazarene without really engaging extra force with anybody else during regular days. I guess what is really important is the strong faith you have in your mind and in your heart that you is the believer of our savior Jesus Christ.
